"Our company participated in the construction project for the high speed railway in Taiwan. This is a 1.6 trillion yen mega scale project which involved the collaborated effort of seven major Japanese construction firms. Aside from myself, there were over 100 engineers participating in the project from our company who worked onsite. All the members were experienced experts who were fully knowledgeable in regards to their part in the project such as in civil engineering, electricity, traffic lights, and communication.”

"Our company uses the skills and knowledge that are possessed only by experienced, which is the reason that we receive the support of such a large number of contractors. Particularly for the overseas projects, we are given the role of leading the projects and are responsible not only for the actual construction work, but also for providing precise instructions to the foreign staff. We are able to handle this role due to our long years of experience and accumulation of specific skills in each of our fields. Experienced engineers in the average age range of 52-55 years old are using the skills they have developed over 10 or 20 years and applying it onsite.”

Experiences and skills developed over many years turn into the right reward.

"A big advantage of living and working in Taiwan is that my income is about 1.5 to 2 times higher and I can live on half the living costs compared to when living in Japan. Even considering the money I send home to my family and put into savings, I have more than enough to live a rich life, and above all, it is gratifying as an engineer to be receiving payment that reflects my abilities. You will face one difficulty or another when you first begin your post here but once you get used to things, life will feel very comfortable (laughs)”

"It is not only the matter of income. There is also an ample support system set up for the onsite engineers and their families. For example, there is full-time support staff posted within the company, and messages and packages from families are processed through the company. Also, we are meticulous about ensuring that the engineers keep in regular contact with their families and consider ways to ensure a sense of solidarity between the engineer, family and the company. We do our utmost to build an environment in which the engineers can work with the least amount of stress and anxiety as possible.”

Educating engineers for the next generation and passing on knowledge is also an important task.

"The experience and expertise of Japanese engineers is highly praised around the world. All the projects in which our company participates are highly visible internationally. After the end of a project such as this, it is important to train the local engineers in order for the facility to run smoothly. There is great social significance in taking your skills, which you have developed as an experienced engineer, and transmitting it widely around the world.”

"It is definitely difficult to achieve unity when working with people of different racial and cultural backgrounds. However, when completing the project together after overcoming such difficulties, we can feel a sense of achievement beyond description. I believe that the technique in working successfully overseas is to proactively communicate with one another and, in some cases, to form friendships in private. Through the forming of relationships based on mutual trust between one human being and another, the work will progress smoothly and you will discover new enjoyments in life that you had never experienced before.”
